Six years after its release, version 8 of Drupal is officially end-of-life. The drupal.org website reminds us of this today, not without emotion.

Official End of Life for Drupal 8

Drupal 8 is now end-of-life - PSA-2021-11-30

Since November 17, 2021, version 8 of Drupal is officially end-of-life. This means that the core and contributed modules are no longer supported by the security team.

Drupal 8.0.0 was released on November 9, 2015. The last version was published on November 17, 2021.

All owners and administrators of Drupal 8 sites must upgrade to Drupal 9 in order to receive security updates and bug fixes.

What about Drupal 7 and Drupal 9?

Contributed projects such as themes and modules will still receive security patches if they are compatible with Drupal 7 or 9 and have opted for security coverage. The end of life for Drupal 7 is currently scheduled for November 2022. The end of life for Drupal 9 is scheduled for November 2023. For more information about release schedules, see the release cycle overview.

LTS for 7 and 8?

A commercial "Long Term Support" (LTS) program was proposed for Drupal 6 and is still ongoing.

On his blog, Dries announced the same program for Drupal 7:
"We will launch a commercial long-term support program for Drupal 7. In the past, commercial vendors extended security support for Drupal. In 2015, a commercial long-term support program for Drupal 6 was launched and continues to this day. We plan a similar paid program for Drupal 7 to extend support beyond November 2021. We will update Drupal 7 to support new versions of PHP."

However, nothing will be offered for Drupal 8, which has external dependencies such as Symfony. Migration to a new version of Symfony will require upgrading to Drupal 9 for backward compatibility reasons.

As of today: 80% of our clients with a Drupal 8 site have entrusted us with their upgrade from Drupal 8 to Drupal 9. It is completed or in progress. For the others, it’s not too late, but time is running out.
