Improve working conditions with a Drupal self-assessment platform

Published on 08 July 2024
We are proud to present the new self-assessment platform, developed with Drupal 10, for the National Agency for the Improvement of Working Conditions (Anact). This ambitious project, designed using the design sprint method, aims to provide companies with internal evaluation tools, encouraging them to compare perspectives and commit to a process of continuous improvement.

Improving working conditions in France

Created in 1973, the Anact is a public administrative institution under the supervision of the Ministry of Labor. It develops and distributes methods and tools aimed at sustainably reconciling quality of work life and performance, targeted at employees, their representatives, and the management of SMEs. Anact oversees a network of 16 regional agencies (ARACT) throughout the country.

At the beginning of 2024, Anact entrusted us with the creation of its new self-diagnostic Drupal 10 platform. Led by ARACT Île-de-France, this platform aims to provide companies with internal assessment tools on various work-related topics: quality of work life, health, disability inclusion, hybrid work, and more. We therefore handled the UX design, UI design (user experience and graphic design), development, quality control, hosting, and maintenance.

Design sprint, a UX design method to create digital products in 5 days

The project was designed using the design sprint, a UX design methodology that allows for the rapid creation of digital solutions tailored to users’ needs while incorporating their feedback in an iterative way. As is customary during a design sprint, we conducted several workshops over a workweek that brought together the project manager, UX designers, and our contacts from ARACT Ile de France. This work enabled us to produce:

The main features of the project

The design sprint notably helped define the platform’s features and organize them to make the user experience as smooth as possible. The implemented features are as follows:

  • Thematic self-assessments: covering various topics related to working conditions.
  • Comparison of perspectives: to compare viewpoints between employee representatives and management.
  • Tracking over time: ability to repeat assessments at different dates to observe changes.
  • Note-taking: during the questionnaires.
  • Pause and resume: ability to pause a questionnaire and resume it later.
  • Additional resources: access to resources to improve on the evaluated topics.

Working conditions: a process of continuous improvement

Changing an organization quickly seems difficult, even unrealistic. Therefore, to encourage a process of continuous improvement, the platform allows you to redo the self-assessment at different times, putting current results into perspective with those previously obtained.

Putting perspectives into context to encourage dialogue

Self-assessment can be influenced by individual subjectivity. That’s why the platform allows several people to complete the self-assessment. This feature aims to encourage dialogue and the exchange of perspectives, in order to achieve results that are both more objective and to engage both parties in a joint process that leads to solutions satisfactory for everyone.

Segmentation of the user journey at the heart of UX thinking

Anact wanted to offer a very comprehensive assessment. The downside is that the questionnaires contain a lot of questions—96 for the one on quality of work life, for example. However, as we know, a process that is too long significantly burdens the user experience. Our UX design approach therefore consisted of balancing the questionnaire’s thoroughness with the user experience.

To make this process more engaging and less tedious, we:

  • Segmented the questionnaire into sub-topics.
  • Allowed the diagnosis process to be paused and resumed at any time.
  • Added a progress bar to track completion.
  • Integrated gamification elements to make the process more motivating.
  • Implemented automatic scrolling to bring up the next question after each response.
  • Used a single question format to make the process less mentally taxing.

A bit of gamification to engage!

To make self-assessments more enjoyable, we have integrated gamification features, with a reward system that recognizes the completion of each subtopic.

A chaque sous thématique du questionnaire complétée, un petit badge de récompense se colore en vert, de même que le titre de la sous thématique.

Results: a teaching approach to facilitate taking action

Once the questionnaire’s sub-themes are completed, the user receives the results of their self-assessment. To offer a view that is both clear and detailed, we chose to present the results graphically: a radar chart whose branches represent the questionnaire’s sub-themes. These are scored on a scale from 1 to 4. The user also accesses a summary sheet highlighting the organization’s strengths and providing recommendations on areas for improvement. These results can then be downloaded or printed.

The self-diagnostic platform: a powerful HR tool

Innovative, this platform enables companies to assess and improve Quality of Life and Working Conditions. With its intuitive interface and engaging features, it is a valuable tool for many businesses. Self-diagnosis tools are also ideal for addressing major human resources issues: skills assessment, identification of preferences, comparison of viewpoints, monitoring of professional situations over time. If you are interested in these features, feel free to contact us to discuss your projects!

Many thanks to the teams at Anact and ARACT Île-de-France for their work and trust!

Anact's opinion on its new Drupal assessment platform

The bluedrop.fr agency supported us in creating a self-diagnostic platform. To kick off this project, they suggested two days of in-person work, in the form of a "design sprint." This step, which could have been seen as tedious, ultimately proved to be essential. It allowed us to clearly define our needs, gain a shared understanding with the team, and immediately address any constraints. As a result, the platform was developed in a short time without reconsidering the initial mock-ups. Many thanks to the team for this innovative and collaborative experience. The tool is a real success!
